VENEERS
Veneers are used to restore the aesthetic (appearance) aspect of the teeth. Veneers were originally invented by a California dentist named Charles Pincus, when he created veneers that were used for a short time to change the appearance of an actor’s teeth. Then, in 1982, research began by Simosen and Calamia that revealed porcelain could be etched with hydrofluoric acid and that the bonds achieved through this were much
stronger than those achieved in the past. This allowed the porcelain veneers to be held to the surface of the tooth permanently. Now, with improvements in technology, cements and bonding agents have been created that can last up to 10-30 years.
Veneers may have to be replaced over time though, due to cracking, leaking, chipping, discoloration, decay, shrinkage of the gum line or damage from injury or tooth grinding. They are a very important tool in cosmetic dentistry – a dentist can use one veneer to restore a single tooth that has been fractured or discolored, or they might restore multiple teeth in order to achieve a complete makeover. They are especially useful to help people: who have small teeth, to close spaces, lengthen teeth, and provide shape and symmetry to make teeth appear straight
